Willem Adolph Visser 't Hooft (20 settembre 1900 - 4 luglio 1985) era un teologo olandese che divenne il primo segretario generale del Consiglio ecumenico delle chiese nel 1948 e mantenne questa posizione fino al suo pensionamento nel 1966.

Biografia

Visser 't Hooft è nato ad Haarlem , nei Paesi Bassi e nella sua prima età adulta, è stato coinvolto nel movimento cristiano studentesco olandese e presto è stato coinvolto a livello internazionale. Nel 1925, durante il suo primo viaggio negli Stati Uniti con John R. Mott , si interessò al movimento "social gospel".

Ha scritto la sua dissertazione di dottorato su di esso presso l' Università di Leiden nel 1928. Dall'ottobre 1929 (vol. 22, n. 4) fino al terzo trimestre 1939 (vol. 32, n. 3), è stato editore di The Student World , rivista trimestrale pubblicata a Ginevra dalla Federazione cristiana studentesca mondiale. Il motto della rivista era Ut Omnes Unum Sint .

Visser 't Hooft era attivo nella resistenza contro il nazismo . Il suo appartamento a Ginevra , in Svizzera , divenne il punto d'incontro per i membri della Resistenza tedesca contro il Terzo Reich tra marzo e aprile 1944. Hilda Monte e Hannah Bertholet erano tra le 15-16 persone provenienti da paesi di tutta Europa che si incontrarono per discutere della resistenza internazionale a Nazismo .

Nel 1938 Visser 't Hooft fu nominato primo segretario generale del CEC, sebbene all'epoca avesse solo 38 anni. Ha scritto 15 libri in diverse lingue e numerosi articoli e circa 50.000 lettere.
